Language Empowerment

Helping people find their voice in the languages that open doors.

At the Creative Arts Center, people from many nationalities build confidence speaking, reading and writing, so they can share their ideas, connect across communities and reach new opportunities.

Every language is a way in

People in Kakuma grow up speaking several languages, yet the ones used in school, at work and in public life are not always the ones they know best.

When a person can speak up with confidence, they can ask questions, share ideas and take part in the decisions that shape their lives.

What we practise

Four everyday skills, built a little at a time.

  • Two learners in conversation

    Everyday conversation

Talking, listening and asking questions with confidence in daily situations.

  • A learner reading a book

    Reading

Building vocabulary and understanding through stories, news and shared texts.

  • A learner writing in a notebook

    Writing

From simple messages to CVs, applications and personal stories.

  • A young person presenting to a group

    Speaking in public

Presenting, debating and telling stories in front of an audience.

A relaxed group learning session

How a session feels

  • Everyone speaks

Short activities get every learner talking, not just listening.

  • Mistakes are welcome

Learners try, get friendly feedback and try again, without fear of being laughed at.

  • Learning from each other

Young people from different nationalities teach and encourage one another.

Where better language leads

Stronger language skills change what a young person can do next.

  • School and study

Follow lessons, read materials and ask questions with ease.

  • Work and opportunity

Apply, interview and communicate clearly with employers.

  • Community life

Join meetings, dialogue and local events as an equal voice.

  • Self-belief

Speak up, and know that what you say is worth hearing.

How you can help

Language is learned in company. These are the ways to give young people more of it.

  • Be a conversation partner

Join sessions in person or online to talk with learners and help them practise.

  • Share books and materials

Books, dictionaries and learning materials that suit young readers.

  • Lead a workshop

Run a reading club, a writing session or a public speaking class.
